I just got back from Nacogdoches, Texas from my niece Leslie’s wedding. I drove the food down for the wedding and my daughter Kim flew down with the cake. One of the guests was an adorable little boy named Korrigan. He made my heart sing when he said, “That’s the best chocolate cake I ever had in my whole life!” Congratulations to Leslie and her honey Hunter! It was a beautiful wedding! This weekend we celebrate St. Paddy’s Day. I am not sure why the Irish are considered to be so lucky, but I do know that they have inspired some wonderful food and we will be serving it at our restaurant this week!
First I wish to remind everyone of our Pot of Gold going on right now in the town of Kimmswick. Several of our area merchants are participating, simply register at one of the locations to win a Pot of Gold brimming with gifts and surprises. Hurry and register soon! The last day for the contest is on March 17th, and the drawing will be on March 18th.
This week The Blue Owl will have Corned Beef and Cabbage on the menu. We will also run our Reuben Meatloaf special on the 12th, 14th and 16th. The meatloaf has been especially popular! It is a meatloaf made from fresh ground beef and stuffed with corned beef, sauerkraut and thousand island dressing; such a fun twist on a good old standby. We will be serving our Cream of Potato Soup all week as well. Come in, get warm and have yourself a satisfying home cooked meal!
Our St. Paddy’s Day menu is of course Corned Beef, along with New Baby Red Potatoes, Cabbage Wedges and Waldorf Salad. For dessert, be sure to get a slice of our Shamrock Pie; made with a layer of chocolate mousse, a layer of whipped cream and a layer of mint mousse. We will also have our Shamrock and Leprechaun Cookies available; be sure to call ahead of time (636-464-3128) if you need to order any for your celebration.
Also, mark your calendars for Breakfast with the Easter Bunny on March 30th at 9am. It is by reservation only, so get yours in soon! We will also be offering an adorable workshop that day at our Blue Owl Sweet Shoppe in Kimmswick with crafts, face painting and pictures with the one and only Easter Bunny!
Now, for our out-of-town friends (or in-town friends that won’t be able to come in and see us!), I wanted to share a recipe with you!
Cream of Potato Soup
6 slices of bacon ¼ cup chopped ham
4 cups potatoes, peeled and diced 2 cups heavy cream
1 medium onion, diced 4 cups milk
2 Tbs instant chicken broth 1 Tbs dry parsley flakes
1 tsp ground thyme 2 Tbs cornstarch, mixed with ¼ cup water
1 Tbs oil (or bacon grease)
Fry bacon until crisp. Crumble; set aside. Place potatoes in large stockpot. Add just enough water to cover. Add in onions, instant broth, thyme, oil, bacon and ham. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer until potatoes are tender. Drain off excess water. Return to heat, stir in remaining ingredients. Blend until smooth and heat through.
