~ Better Baking ~

Another wonderful Thanksgiving and now we head full steam into the Christmas season. I want to pause and let you know how very grateful I am for all of you; my dear family, friends, Blue Owl family, Kimmswick community, and extended connections all over the world!

For many folks, holiday baking is at the top of their list of heartwarming traditions. Is there anything better than a day filled with laughter and cookies? Today, I want to share a few tips with you that can help your baking day be less work and more fun.

  • Plan ahead. Just like Santa, you want to make a list and check it twice. Who is a part of your baking day? How many cookies or other treats do you wish to make? How many different kinds? Look up your recipes and make lists of all the items you will need. Don’t forget gift boxes or bags, parchment paper, plastic wrap, cookie cutters, etc.
  • Prep your area. Before your elves arrive to help, clean the area thoroughly. Store away all items you won’t need, such as toasters or decorations; a clear counter space will help with productivity. Make space in the fridge for dough that needs to be chilled. Gather your ingredients, measuring cups and spoons, etc. Consider covering part of your counters with wax paper, for easy clean up, especially if the littlest of helpers will be measuring.
  • Keep it clean. Be prepared for cleaning up as you go. Make sure long hair is pulled back and hands are washed often. Baby wipes and disinfecting wipes are helpful for quick clean up of splashes and spills.
  • Hate measuring sticky ingredients? For peanut butter, shortening or other messy ingredients, line your measuring cup with clear plastic wrap. Measure, pull the wrap out and put the ingredient into the bowl, throw the wrap away.
  • Use parchment paper. Parchment paper can be a huge time saver, plus nothing sticks to it. Cookies can be prepared on the paper while the previous batch is in the oven, then slid onto the cookie sheet and quickly into the oven. Slide the baked cookies, still on the paper, right onto the cooling rack or counter top.
  • One recipe. Unless you simply love making numerous different bowls of dough, keep it simple by using a basic sugar cookie dough and adding ingredients for a variety of tastes.
  • Bar none. If you’re searching for a new recipe, consider making a bar cookie (baked like a pan of brownies) instead of individual cookies to save time.
  • Don’t overbake! One of the worst mistakes you can make is to bake your treats too long, leaving you with dry or rock-hard cookies. Know whether your oven temperature is correct or, better yet, calibrate it. Set the timer for the least amount of recommended time (or less) and check cookies to see if they are done.
  • OR let us make it for you! The best tip ever, especially for those who are extremely busy or who don’t enjoy time in the kitchen. Spend more time with your family and friends. You don’t have to bake because you can order your favorite treats from us.
